Grace Millane

Grace Millane was a 22-year-old British backpacker who was tragically murdered in December 2018 in New Zealand by a man she met on the dating app Tinder. Her death shocked both New Zealand and the international community due to the brutal nature of the crime and the circumstances surrounding it. Here is an overview of the case:

Background:

Grace Millane, originally from Essex, England, was traveling around the world on a backpacking trip after graduating from the University of Lincoln. In late 2018, she arrived in New Zealand, one of the destinations on her travels.

The Events Leading Up to the Crime:

  • On December 1, 2018, the day before her 22nd birthday, Grace went on a date with a man she had matched with on Tinder. The man, a 26-year-old New Zealander, took her to a bar in Auckland, where they spent the evening drinking and socializing.
  • They later went back to his apartment in central Auckland, where things took a dark turn.

The Murder:

  • Grace Millane was killed that night in the man’s apartment. The court later heard that she died by strangulation during what the defense claimed was consensual rough sex.
  • After killing Grace, the man did not seek help or alert authorities. Instead, he carried out a series of disturbing actions, including taking explicit photos of her body, searching online for information about body disposal, and ultimately putting her body in a suitcase.

Discovery of Grace’s Body:

  • Grace was reported missing by her family when she failed to contact them for her birthday on December 2.
  • After an extensive search, her body was discovered on December 9, 2018, in a shallow grave in the Waitākere Ranges, a forested area west of Auckland.
